Otoplasty (Ear Surgery) is a cosmetic procedure designed to correct prominent or misshapen ears, enhancing facial harmony and self-confidence. This surgery is typically performed on children over the age of 7, adolescents, and adults who are dissatisfied with the appearance of their ears.​

Preparation: Before the surgery, patients should attend a pre-assessment appointment to evaluate their general health and discuss any medications they are taking. It's important to follow specific instructions regarding fasting before the surgery; typically, patients are advised not to eat for 6 hours prior to the procedure if undergoing general anaesthesia. Additionally, arrange for transportation home, as driving immediately after the procedure is not advisable.​

Procedure: Performed under local anaesthesia, the surgeon makes a small incision behind the ear to expose the ear cartilage. The cartilage is then reshaped, folded, or removed as necessary to position the ear closer to the head. Stitches are placed to secure the ear in its new position. The procedure typically lasts between 1 to 2 hours. ​

Recovery: Post-surgery, patients may experience mild discomfort, swelling, and bruising around the ear. A bandage is usually applied to protect the ears and aid healing. It's essential to keep the bandage clean and dry and to avoid activities that could strain the ears. Most children can return to school after 1 to 2 weeks, and swimming is typically safe after 4 to 6 weeks.
